Sandcastle Waterpark

Sightseeing attraction | Blackpool | England | United Kingdom

The Sandcastle Waterpark in Blackpool, England, is one of the most well-known and popular leisure facilities in the region and is considered the largest indoor water park in the UK. Located on the famous promenade of this lively coastal town, the park offers a tropical experience with year-round temperatures of around 29 degrees Celsius, making it an attractive destination regardless of the British weather. Since its opening in 1986, the Sandcastle Waterpark has become a staple of family-friendly attractions in Blackpool, a city known for its long tradition as a popular seaside resort. The park combines thrills with relaxation, appealing to a wide audience, from young children to adventurous adults.

The history of the Sandcastle Waterpark began as part of a public-private partnership project built on the site of the former South Shore Open Air Baths. After the management fully transitioned to the Blackpool Council a few years later, the park was continuously expanded and modernized. Today, it is operated by Merlin Entertainments, a company that also manages other significant attractions in Blackpool such as the Blackpool Tower and SEA LIFE Blackpool. This development reflects Blackpool's commitment to solidifying its status as a leading family coastal destination.

The centerpiece of the water park is its over 18 water slides and attractions designed for different age groups and preferences. For adrenaline junkies, there are spectacular slides like the "Master Blaster," known as the longest indoor roller coaster water slide in the world. This over 200-meter-long slide features multiple upward and downward passages ridden with inflatable tubes, guaranteeing a thrilling experience. Equally impressive is the "Sidewinder," the world's first vertical indoor water slide where the brave experience a free fall before shooting into a halfpipe structure. Other highlights include "Aztec Falls," a slide that starts in complete darkness and ends in a giant bowl, and "Montazooma," a mat slide with 360-degree loops and tight turns starting from the park's rooftop terrace.

For families and younger visitors, the Sandcastle Waterpark offers a variety of gentler attractions. The "Typhoon Lagoon Wavepool" is a wave pool promising fun for all ages with its gentle waves, while the "Ushi Gushi Action River" is a relaxed lazy river with surprising water jets. Young children can enjoy the "Caribbean Storm Treehouse," an interactive play area with mini slides, water guns, and a giant tipping bucket that regularly pours water over the players. Other areas like "HMS Thundersplash" and "Fort Riptide" feature shallow water zones with cannons and small slides specifically designed for the youngest guests.

A unique feature of the park is its tropical Aztec-themed theming, reflected in the design of the slides, pools, and the entire hall. Artificial palm trees, rock formations, and jungle motifs create an immersive atmosphere that transports visitors to an exotic world. For adults seeking a break from the hustle and bustle, there is the "Sea Breeze Spa" area, an exclusive space with a sauna, steam room, heated loungers, and a salt inhalation room. This area offers a welcome opportunity for relaxation while children continue to splash around.

The Sandcastle Waterpark places great emphasis on inclusion and accessibility. It has been awarded multiple times for its efforts in accessibility, offering facilities such as water wheelchairs to ease access to the pools and hosting special events for families with special needs. Additionally, visitors can use "SandStormer" beach wheelchairs to explore the nearby coast, making the park a pioneer in inclusive tourism. Trained staff and water ambassadors are ready to assist guests with disabilities and ensure a safe experience.

In addition to the water attractions, the park offers a variety of amenities. Several food stands and restaurants, such as "Water's Edge Kitchen" and the "Swim Shack," serve a range of foods, from snacks to hot meals, which can also cater to special dietary requests. A souvenir shop offers themed memorabilia and swim gear, while numerous seating areas and private cabanas provide extra comfort. The park has also made a name for itself by setting world records, such as for the most people on a water slide within an hour or participating in the world's largest swim lesson.

The surroundings of the Sandcastle Waterpark benefit from its location on the bustling promenade of Blackpool, within sight of the famous Pleasure Beach amusement park and other attractions like the Blackpool Illuminations, an annual light festival. This combination makes the water park an ideal part of a longer stay in the city. Despite occasional criticism of noise or queues during peak season, the park remains a favorite, as reflected in the consistently positive reviews from visitors.

In summary, the Sandcastle Waterpark is a versatile experience that combines adventure, relaxation, and family fun in a tropical setting. It embodies Blackpool's ambition to be a premier destination and delights with its innovative slides, inclusive philosophy, and unique atmosphere. Whether seeking thrills or simply a break from everyday life, this water park offers something for everyone and leaves a lasting impression on its guests.

We booked tickets for 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning, for 3 hours. I would recommend you to buy the earliest entry because around lunchtime the place is packed! Kids enjoyed it a lot and we will probably be back.

We booked Tiki Cabana for a birthday celebration. It was SO worth it. For the money, that includes all day access, spa access for over 18’s, lunch, mini fridge full of drinks and parking. We were so impressed and felt it was good value. The private area is very private and clean, with a nice table and chairs for lunch, clean hot tub and comfortable seating area. It’s great to pop back for a drink and a little recharge throughout the day. We were welcomed in so well and all staff were kind and helpful. We are already looking at when we can come again for someone else’s birthday! Thank you to the team. Top marks. (You use the main changing and toilet facilities)

We had a great time at Sandcastle. It was a nice way to spend a few hours. We also used an offer which made it more affordable. My girls were too young to go on any of the big slides but enjoyed the little ones and loved the circular wave thing. That was great. We also ate at the café which was basic burger style stuff but a novelty to sit there in your swimwear in winter. I would advise you to heed the stoic philosopher Epictetus’s advice. “If you go out to bathe, picture what happens at a bathhouse - in this case - it's really packed full of people, you'll bump into people when you're spinning round and you will get splashed — In this way you will be more prepared to start the activity." but honestly everyone was pretty chilled about it and just doing there one thing. Many people but it just felt normal. Everyone just mooching around and enjoying it. For the place itself there were only a couple of disappointing things. My girls loved the wave pool but we only saw waves twice in the time we were there. It would be good if the waves were turned on more because otherwise it's a big shallow pool with nothing special happening. Or if there was a countdown clock so you knew when the next wave was coming you could go and do something else instead of just hanging around on the off chance that they might turn the waves on. The second thing was a lack of family sized changing rooms. As a dad with two small kids I had to get all our outer clothes. Winter coats etc and traipse around the busy and large changing room trying to find somewhere to get changed. It's not a pleasant end to the day. There must be a better solution. It's not like there was anywhere else to get changed like we would after swimming at the local baths. Just a row of benches would have been better! Overall a great time was had. An unusual day out for us.

Nice place only one thing that would like to have less people in the water park , is should be less crowded us is to much people at one time and you waiting for ride 20-30 min ,I think for safety reason park shouldn’t allowed to many people

Went with my 8 year old son. We decided to go early at 10am. Was still quite busy even first thing but we managed to get on the slides a few times before the big lines. By 11/12 all the lines are massive for the slides. Our favourite slide is aztec falls and is nice that you can go down together in a dingie. The other one that goes all round the whole waterpark is a good thrill too. All the other slides not really worth going on. They do really exaggerate when they advertise the amount of slides they have. Just are tiny little baby ones or ones that are doubled, tripled up so there's 3/4 slides but it's all the same slide they are not individual slides that are all different. The two issues I have with the place are how busy it gets and how expensive it is. £50 for 1 child and 1 adult is far too extreme.

Absolutely great place for the children and adults. Staff are always very polite and pleasant. Ques for the slides can get big, but they do seem to go down quickly. I'd advise booking the last slot in the day to avoid it being very busy if you would rather a smaller crowd. Food is available but it isn't very nice it's just fast food.

Good rides but absolutely packed!! I have never been anywhere so busy. Someone pushed my son into the side/wall on the rapids and he hit his head and had a bruise, purely because there were just too many people. Very disappointing.

Great place to go with the kids on a rainy day! Good selection of rides, suitable for all ages. We got a 50% off deal, which was great. I would say without that, then it is an expensive day out.
